Excess or murkiness obstructs what people try to say but William Zinsser excels in sharing these principles clearly. Clutter is the main threat to a clear message and it can go from using adjectives as nouns, nouns as verbs, picking longer and pompous words instead of shorter ones, to even inflating what doesn’t needs to be inflated. It takes respect for words and several reviews to strip every sentence to its cleanest components. That’s why William Zinsser starts with the principles of good writing. I was looking to master the non-fiction writing process but no one can master a craft without knowing its rules. I couldn’t stop practicing the lead in my head during my time reading “On Writing Well” and this review is about the journey that got me into writing it. It takes time and practice to get better. What’s the perfect lead to hook a reader?
